With its many natural springs and close proximity to the Saint Joseph River, the history of Fernwood’s property extends far beyond the days when Kay Boydston, Fernwood’s founder, lived on the land with her family in the early 1940s. Join Dr. Low for an in-depth discussion on the history of the native Potawatomi communities that inhabited, and continue to inhabit, the region around which Fernwood Botanical Garden is now located.

About the speaker:

Dr. John N. Low is a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, an associate professor at the Ohio State University in Comparative Studies, Director of the Newark Earthworks Center at the University, and author of Imprints: The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and the City of Chicago. When not teaching he lives in New Carlisle, Indiana with his wife Barbara. 

Low received his Ph.D. in American Culture at the University of Michigan and also earned a graduate certificate in Museum Studies and a Juris Doctorate from that University. He received a BA from Michigan State University, a second BA in American Indian Studies from the University of Minnesota, and an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago.
