Natural Dyeing with Invasive Barberry

Explore the magic of natural dyeing while learning to identify and manage an invasive plant species! In this hands-on class, we’ll experiment with basic resist techniques to create patterns on silk bandanas, then immerse the fabric in a prepared barberry dye bath. While the dye simmers, we’ll head outside to hunt for invasive Japanese barberry on Fernwood’s property and learn how to identify, harvest, and process the roots to make the bright yellow dye.

What to wear: Long pants and long-sleeved shirts, hiking shoes or boots, tall socks, and leather gardening gloves (if you have them).

Location: Fauna Wing of the Sims Education Center

Cost: $25/person ($20 Fernwood members)
